Fish Habitat

Great fishing starts with healthy habitats

AFANT and OzFish Unlimited:

A Fish Habitat Partnership

Since 1980 AFANT has actively advocated for the protection of the ecosystems and water resources that underpin the Northern Territory’s healthy fish stocks. So it made perfects sense to join forces with OzFish Unlimited, Australia’s not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping Aussie recreational fishers give back to fish habitat.

In 2019 AFANT established a formal partnership with OzFish Unlimited to engage and build the capacity of recreational fishers to actively monitor, protect and rehabilitate fish habitat. We recognise that protecting and restoring fish habitat is essential to the productivity of NT recreational fisheries and we look to continuing a productive project partnership with OzFish into the future.

Watch this space in 2020, as were about to kick off some great projects and move this partnership forward.

More about our fish habitat projects….

This video shows one of the first deployments of our Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems. As part of our partnership with OzFish Unlimited, we are working with volunteer fishers and using BRUVs to monitor fish communities and habitats in and around Darwin Harbour.

The BRUV’s were built and then tested at various locations by our staff and volunteers. The next step is work with CDU and NT Fisheries to revisit a monitor sites from a fish community and habitat survey from 10 years ago.
