In a statement this week, the Northern Territory Government announced the future of fishing in Manton Dam is assured even after it returns to service and supplies drinking water to Darwin. To ensure Territorians have continued use of Manton Dam for boating and fishing, Power and Water Corporation will be tasked to provide suitably enhanced water treatment.

Manton Dam is stocked annually with barramundi and provides safe and accessible fishing fishing experiences for local families and visitors to Darwin.  Prior to the announcement,  AFANT was engaged with the relevant departments and Ministers with a view to securing this important outcome. AFANT has consistently encouraged the Government to think of water storages as community owned assets that can be leveraged to deliver economic and social benefits beyond the water they supply to community and industry.

In announcing the news NT Minister for Water Security Eva Lawler explained that Darwin’s future water supply will be guaranteed by returning Manton Dam to service and then building the Adelaide River Offstream Water Storage (AROWS). Minister Lawler  said “It is important that we develop sustainable solutions that protect our environment and maintain our great Territory lifestyle.

The announcement on Manton Dam access has been welcomed by AFANT as great news for fishing. AFANT’s CEO David Ciaravolo said “This announcement is great news for fishing and other recreational activities on the Dam.  AFANT are encouraged by this important decision which will allow the Territory’s public asset to provide diverse benefits to the community and we look forward to the potential of other possibilities.

“Manton Dam is stocked with barramundi and is a safe fishing location for families. We welcome the news that these important fishing experiences will be able to continue once the dam is brought back online, said Mr Ciaravolo.
